What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated and essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly employed after metal formation to ensure pristine surfaces. This meticulous process involves immersing the metal into an acid bath, known as the pickling liquor. The choice of acid is crucial and varies with the metal type; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the preferred choice. For metals exhibiting high acid resistance, more potent acids or a two-step pickling method may be necessary to achieve optimal cleaning without compromising the metal's integrity.
How is pickling performed?
Before embarking on the pickling journey, metals undergo a preliminary rinse to strip away dirt and debris. Subsequently, they are submerged in a bath of expertly chosen pickling liquor. Here, the acid delicately dissolves surface impurities, safeguarding the metal's structure with precision timing to avert overexposure. Upon reaching the designated time limit, the metal emerges, pristine and refreshed, followed by another rinse. Often, this process culminates in oiling, adding a protective sheen and resistance to the immaculate surface.
