What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, most frequently utilized post-metal formation. This meticulous procedure involves the cleansing of metal surfaces through immersion in an acid solution, known as pickling liquor. The specific acid used varies based on the metal type, but hydrochloric acid is commonly employed for low alloy steels. For metals with high acid resistance, a more potent acid or a dual-step pickling approach may be required to achieve optimal cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a preliminary rinse to eliminate substantial dirt and debris from the metal surface. Subsequently, the metal is submerged into a bath of pickling liquor. During immersion, the acid effectively removes surface impurities. It's crucial to adhere to a specified time limit to avoid overexposure to the acid. With accurate pickling liquor choice and precise immersion timing, surface imperfections are cleansed with minimal metal loss. After the pickling phase, a further rinse is conducted, typically followed by an oiling procedure to enhance the metal's surface protection.
