What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly utilized after metal formation to ensure pristine cleanliness. It involves immersing the metal in a specialized acid solution, known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid, usually hydrochloric for low alloy steels, depends on the metal type. For metals exhibiting high acid resistance, more potent acids or a two-step pickling process may be necessary to achieve optimal surface cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse to eliminate large particles of dirt and debris. The metal is then submerged in pickling liquor, where the acid diligently removes surface impurities. To prevent overexposure and potential damage, the immersion duration is carefully controlled. With precise timing and the appropriate pickling liquor, surface imperfections are efficiently eradicated with minimal metal loss. After pickling, the metal is rinsed again and often undergoes an oiling process to enhance surface protection.
