What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a refined metal surface cleaning process, primarily employed post-formation of the metal. In this meticulous process, the metal is immersed in a specialized acid bath known as pickling liquor, which varies according to the metal type. Typically, for low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is used. However, for metals with high acid resistance, more potent acids or a dual-step pickling method are deployed to ensure impeccable surface cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse of the metal to clear away any large dirt particles. After this preparatory stage, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath where the acid skillfully strips away surface impurities. It's crucial to monitor the immersion time to prevent overexposure. When executed with precise timing and the correct pickling liquor, this process removes surface discontinuities efficiently with minimal metal erosion. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes a final rinse and often an oiling procedure to enhance its finish.
