What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential and transformative metal surface cleansing technique, particularly utilized after a metal has been shaped. This meticulous process involves immersing the metal into a specialized acidic solution known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid, most commonly hydrochloric for low alloy steels, is crucial and varies depending on the metal type. For metals exhibiting higher resistance to acids, more potent acids or advanced two-step pickling methods are employed to ensure precise and effective cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
Prior to the pickling process, metals undergo an initial rinse to cleanse them of significant dirt and debris. Subsequently, they are submerged in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid diligently eradicates surface impurities. Timed immersion is crucial to avoid acid overexposure, as it ensures the removal of surface discontinuities while minimizing metal loss. Upon reaching the optimal immersion duration, the metal is extracted, rinsed, and often undergoes a protective oiling process to enhance its longevity and resilience.
