What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly employed after metal shaping. This meticulous method involves placing the metal in contact with a specially-formulated acid, known as pickling liquor, to ensure a pristine finish. The choice of acid in the pickling liquor is tailored to the type of metal; hydrochloric acid is commonly used for low alloy steels. For metals with a high resistance to acids, a stronger acid or a two-step pickling process might be necessary to achieve optimal surface purity.
How is pickling performed?
Before pickling, metals are typically pre-rinsed with a solution to eliminate substantial particles of dirt and debris. Next, the metal is immersed in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid delicately removes surface impurities. This process must be meticulously timed to avoid overexposure to the acid, ensuring minimal metal loss while effectively cleaning the surface. After the specified time, the metal is removed and rinsed again. Often, a subsequent oiling process follows, which enhances the metal's surface protection.
