What is Pickling Steel?
Pickling is an advanced metal surface cleaning process, predominantly applied after metal formation. This meticulous process involves immersing metal in a specialized acid solution known as pickling liquor, effectively purging the surface of impurities. The choice of acid is crucial and varies depending on the metal; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is utilized. However, for metals with high acid resistance, a stronger acid or a dual-step pickling approach may be required to ensure optimal cleaning efficiency.
How is Pickling Performed?
The pickling process begins with the metal undergoing a thorough rinse to clear away coarse debris and dirt. Post-rinsing, the metal is submerged in the pickling liquor, where the acid meticulously eliminates surface impurities. Timing is of the essence; hence, the metal is promptly removed once the desired immersion period lapses to prevent excessive acid exposure. With precise timing and carefully selected pickling liquor, surface irregularities are efficiently eradicated with minimal metal loss. Following pickling, the metal undergoes a final rinse and often proceeds to an oiling phase to further preserve its integrity.
