What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly employed post-metal forming. This vital procedure involves immersing metal in an acid solution, known as pickling liquor, to meticulously cleanse its surface. The acid type is tailored to the specific metal, with hydrochloric acid being the norm for most low alloy steels. For metals showing high acid resistance, a more potent acid or a complex two-step pickling method is employed to achieve superior cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to remove substantial dirt and debris from the metal. Post-rinsing, the metal is submerged into a pickling liquor bath, where the acid actively purifies the surface by eliminating impurities. After reaching the predetermined immersion duration, the metal is extracted to avoid excessive acid exposure. With the optimal pickling liquor and precise immersion timing, metal surface discontinuities are efficiently eradicated with negligible metal loss. Subsequent to acid treatment, the metal undergoes a final rinse, followed by an oiling process.
