What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a specialized metal surface cleaning process employed after metal formation. It involves a transformative cleansing method where metal is immersed in an acidic solution known as pickling liquor. The specific acid used is tailored to the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being prevalent for most low alloy steels. For metals with high acid resistance, stronger acids or a two-step process may be necessary to achieve impeccable surface cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse, removing significant dirt and debris from the metal. Post-rinsing, the metal is bathed in pickling liquor, where the acid expertly eliminates surface impurities. Timely removal is critical to prevent overexposure. With precise immersion periods and correctly chosen pickling liquor, surface irregularities are effectively eradicated, ensuring minimal metal loss. Upon extraction from the acidic bath, a final rinse is conducted, followed by an oiling process to enhance surface protection.
