What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated metal surface cleaning method predominantly used post-metal formation. This meticulous process involves immersing the metal in a specialized acid bath, known as pickling liquor, which effectively cleanses the surface. Depending on the metal type, pickling liquor can vary, with most low alloy steels utilizing hydrochloric acid. For metals demonstrating high acid resistance, a stronger acid or a dual-step pickling process may be necessary to achieve optimal cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a strategic rinse to eradicate large debris and dirt particles from the metal. Next, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid meticulously dissolves impurities. The immersion period is carefully monitored to avoid excessive metal exposure. By selecting the appropriate pickling liquor and adhering to the precise immersion duration, surface irregularities are efficiently eliminated with negligible metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes another rinse, followed by an oiling procedure to enhance its surface properties.
