What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a meticulous metal surface purification process that is predominantly applied post-metal formation. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the preferred choice. How is pickling performed?
Before pickling can commence, the metal is generally pre-rinsed with a solution to eliminate significant dirt and debris. Subsequently, the metal is immersed in a pickling liquor bath where the acid diligently eradicates surface impurities. It is crucial to adhere to a defined immersion duration to avert excessive acid exposure. With the optimal pickling liquor and precise timing, surface imperfections are effectively eradicated with negligible metal loss. Post pickling, the metal undergoes a subsequent rinse and often is subject to an oiling process to preserve its integrity.
