What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface purification process frequently used following the formation of metal. This critical procedure involves immersing the metal into a specialized acid solution known as pickling liquor. This precise process, primarily utilizing hydrochloric acid for low alloy steels, effectively cleanses and polishes the metal surface. For metals resistant to standard acids, more potent acids or a dual-step pickling method might be employed to ensure thorough cleaning and achieve immaculate results.
How is pickling performed?
Before undergoing the pickling process, metals are meticulously rinsed to eliminate any large particles of dirt and debris. Following this preliminary cleaning, the metal is submerged in an expertly prepared pickling liquor bath. Here, the acid diligently removes surface impurities, ensuring a pristine finish. The metal remains immersed only for a designated time to prevent damage from overexposure. With the right balance of pickling liquor and immersion duration, surface imperfections are minimized with negligible metal loss. After the pickling stage, the metal is rinsed again and typically undergoes an oiling process to further enhance its surface quality.
