What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated and essential metal surface cleaning process utilized predominantly post-metal formation. This meticulous cleaning involves submerging the metal into a specially formulated acid solution, known as the pickling liquor. The choice of acid is tailored to the metal type, with the prevalent option for most low alloy steels being hydrochloric acid. For metals exhibiting high acid resistance, a more potent acid or a two-step pickling method is employed to ensure optimal cleanliness and surface preparation.
How is pickling performed?
Pickling is a carefully orchestrated process, beginning with an initial rinse to clear substantial dirt and debris. The metal is then submerged in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid diligently works to strip away surface impurities. The duration of immersion is meticulously monitored to prevent excessive acid exposure. By using the correct acid formulation and immersion time, surface discontinuities are effectively removed with minimal metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes another rinse and often proceeds to a protective oiling process to finalize its pristine condition.
