What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a highly effective metal surface cleaning process, predominantly utilized post-metal formation to enhance surface purity. This meticulous technique involves immersing the metal in an acid solution known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid is typically hydrochloric acid for low alloy steels, ensuring optimal cleaning. However, for metals exhibiting high acid resistance, more potent acids or a sophisticated two-step pickling method are employed to achieve pristine surface conditions.
How is pickling performed?
Initially, the metal is meticulously rinsed to eliminate substantial debris, ensuring a clean base for the pickling process. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in the pickling liquor, where the acid diligently erases impurities. To prevent acid overexposure, the metal is extracted after a precise immersion period. This process ensures the removal of surface irregularities while preserving the metal’s integrity. Following this, the metal undergoes a final rinse and is often subjected to an oiling process for enhanced protection.
