What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a meticulous process for cleansing metal surfaces, prominently utilized post metal formation. This sophisticated method involves submerging the metal in an acid-based solution, known as the pickling liquor, effectively stripping away impurities. The choice of acid varies with the type of metal; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is preferred. For metals that boast high acid resistance, either a stronger acid or a dual-step pickling procedure is employed to achieve immaculate surface purity.
How is pickling performed?
Before initiating the intricate pickling process, metals are pre-cleaned using a rinsing solution to eliminate coarse debris and dirt. Subsequently, the metal is submerged into a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid diligently eradicates surface impurities. Precision is key, so the metal is retrieved after a specific duration to avoid acid overexposure. This careful timing, paired with the ideal pickling liquor, ensures a pristine metal surface with minimal material loss. Post-pickling, a final rinse is conducted, often followed by an oiling treatment to enhance surface quality.
