What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential and meticulous metal surface cleaning procedure, predominantly utilized after a metal has been formed to perfection. This sophisticated process involves immersing the metal into a pickling liquor, which is a carefully formulated acid solution. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the preferred choice due to its efficacy. However, metals that exhibit robust resistance to acids may require either a stronger acid or a dual-stage pickling technique to ensure thorough cleansing and achieve the pristine results desired.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a meticulous pre-rinse to eliminate substantial dirt and debris, preparing the metal for the transformative pickling experience. Subsequently, the metal is delicately submerged into the pickling liquor bath. The acid in the liquor then diligently removes impurities from the surface, achieving a flawless finish. Adhering to the precise immersion time ensures that the metal is not overexposed to the acid, safeguarding its integrity while eliminating surface discontinuities with minimal metal loss. Once removed from the bath, the metal undergoes another rinsing stage, followed by an oiling process to enhance its resilience.
