What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, especially vital after metal formation. This meticulous process involves immersing metal into a specialized acid solution known as pickling liquor, effectively cleansing the metal's surface. The choice of acid varies depending on the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being predominant for low alloy steels. For metals resistant to standard acids, more potent acids or a two-step pickling method may be employed to achieve optimal cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
Initially, the metal undergoes a thorough rinse to eliminate large dirt and debris particles. Subsequently, it is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid meticulously purges impurities from the metal's surface. Adhering to a precise immersion time is critical to prevent overexposure to the acid, ensuring surface discontinuities are removed with minimal metal loss. Post pickling, the metal is rinsed again and often proceeds to an oiling stage for further protection.
