What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly utilized after the metal has been formed. This meticulous process involves immersing the metal into a specialized acid called pickling liquor, which efficiently cleanses the surface. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the preferred choice for the pickling liquor. However, for metals with higher resistance to acids, a more potent acid or a dual-step pickling method may be required to achieve optimal cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
To begin the pickling process, the metal is first rinsed with a solution to eliminate large dirt and debris particles. Following this, the metal is submerged into a pickling liquor bath, where the acid actively removes surface impurities. The immersion is carefully timed to avoid overexposure, ensuring the metal surface is cleansed with minimal material loss. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes another rinse and frequently proceeds to an oiling process to protect the freshly cleaned surface.
