What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly employed post-metal formation. This critical process involves immersing the metal in contact with an acid solution known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid varies based on the metal's composition, with hydrochloric acid commonly used for low alloy steels. For metals with high acid resistance, either a stronger acid or a two-step method is required to achieve pristine cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process commences with rinsing the metal to eliminate coarse dirt and debris. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acidic solution meticulously purges the surface impurities. This immersion is precisely timed to avert excessive acid exposure, ensuring optimal surface purity with minimal metal wastage. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes a thorough rinse and often an oiling process to further enhance its protective qualities.
