What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning technique, predominantly utilized after metal formation. This process involves immersing the metal into a specialized acid solution, known as pickling liquor, to thoroughly cleanse its surface. The choice of acid in the pickling liquor is specifically tailored to the type of metal, with hydrochloric acid being most prevalent for low alloy steels. When handling metals that exhibit significant acid resistance, a more potent acid or a dual-step pickling method may be employed to ensure optimal surface cleanliness and pristine results.
How is pickling performed?
To commence the pickling process, the metal is initially rinsed with a solution to eliminate substantial dirt and debris. Following this preliminary rinse, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid effectively removes surface impurities. Adherence to a precise immersion duration is crucial to prevent acid overexposure. With the appropriate pickling liquor and optimal immersion timing, surface irregularities are meticulously stripped away, ensuring minimal metal loss. Post-acid bath, the metal undergoes a secondary rinse and often proceeds to an oiling process for further treatment and protection.
