What is Pickling Steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, often employed post-metal formation. This meticulous procedure involves immersing the metal in an acid solution known as pickling liquor, specifically designed to cleanse the metal's surface. The choice of acid within the pickling liquor is crucial and varies depending on the metal. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the preferred choice, while metals with higher acid resistance may require a more potent acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling process to achieve optimal cleaning results.
How is Pickling Performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse of the metal to eliminate large dirt and debris particles. After this initial cleaning, the metal is gently submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid diligently removes impurities from its surface. Controlled immersion is key; the metal is withdrawn after a specific time to avoid excessive acid exposure. When executed correctly, this process effectively eradicates surface discontinuities with minimal metal loss. Post-pickling, a secondary rinse ensures all residues are removed, often followed by a protective oiling stage to enhance surface integrity.
