What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated metal surface cleaning process, predominantly utilized after metal formation. It involves immersing the metal in an acid, known as the pickling liquor, that meticulously purifies the surface. The choice of acid varies with the metal type; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is customary. For metals with high acid resistance, either a stronger acid or a dual-stage pickling approach may be implemented to achieve exceptional cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
Initially, the metal undergoes a thorough rinse to eliminate gross dirt and debris. Next, it is submerged in a pickling liquor bath where the acid meticulously strips impurities from the metal surface. Following a precise immersion duration to prevent acid overexposure, the metal is extracted, ensuring surface imperfections are efficiently removed with minimal metal loss. Subsequently, the metal is rinsed again and usually undergoes an oiling process to maintain its pristine condition.
