What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a meticulous metal surface cleaning process, pivotal in achieving superior surface quality post-metal formation. This is accomplished by submerging the metal in a specialized acid solution, known as the pickling liquor. The composition of this liquor varies based on the metal type; for instance, most low alloy steels require hydrochloric acid. For metals with high acid resistance, a more potent acid or a two-step pickling procedure might be necessary to attain the desired pristine surface condition.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to eliminate substantial dirt and debris from the metal surface. Following this, the metal is carefully immersed in a bath of pickling liquor. During immersion, the acid diligently eradicates impurities from the surface. It's crucial to adhere to a specified duration to avoid overexposure, ensuring only the intended surface discontinuities are removed with minimal metal loss. Post immersion, the metal undergoes another rinse and is subsequently treated through a process commonly referred to as oiling, prepping it for further use or treatment.
