What is pickling steel?
Pickling steel is an essential and sophisticated metal surface cleaning process, predominantly employed post-metal formation. This meticulous procedure purifies the metal surface by introducing it to a specialized acid solution known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid in the pickling liquor varies depending on the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being commonly utilized for most low-alloy steels. In instances where metals exhibit high resistance to acids, a more potent acid or a dual-step pickling method is implemented to attain superior cleaning outcomes.
How is pickling performed?
The intricate pickling process begins with an initial rinse to discard large dirt particles and debris from the metal surface. Once rinsed, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid diligently eradicates impurities. The metal remains in this bath for a predetermined time to prevent acid overexposure. With the right pickling liquor and precise immersion time, surface imperfections are effectively eliminated with minimal metal loss. After removal from the pickling liquor, the metal undergoes another rinse and often proceeds to an oiling stage to enhance its surface finish.
