What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly utilized post metal formation. It meticulously purifies a metal's surface by immersing it in an acid solution known as pickling liquor. The specific acid employed in this liquor is tailored to the type of metal undergoing the pickling process. For most low-alloy steels, hydrochloric acid proves effective. For metals exhibiting high acid resistance, a stronger acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling approach is often necessary to achieve optimal cleanliness and surface preparation.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process commences with an initial rinse to eliminate substantial dirt and debris from the metal surface. Post-rinsing, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid acts diligently to eradicate surface impurities. Careful monitoring ensures the metal is removed at the precise time to avoid excessive acid exposure. When executed with the ideal pickling liquor and immersion duration, surface imperfections are effectively removed with negligible metal loss. Following the pickling, a secondary rinse is undertaken, often succeeded by a protective oiling process to maintain the metal's integrity.
