What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a meticulous metal surface purification process, largely employed post-metal formation. This method involves immersing metal into a specialized acid solution, termed as pickling liquor, which diligently cleans the metal's surface. The choice of acid varies with the metal type; however, for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the preferred option. For metals demonstrating high resistance to acids, a more potent acid or a dual-stage pickling approach might be essential to achieve the desired pristine cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an essential pre-rinse to eliminate substantial dirt and debris. The metal is then submerged into the pickling liquor bath, where the acid meticulously removes surface impurities. The metal remains immersed for a pre-determined period to avoid excessive acid exposure. With the optimal pickling liquor and precise immersion duration, surface irregularities are effectively eradicated with minimal material loss. After extraction from the pickling bath, the metal undergoes a final rinse and often proceeds to an oiling process to enhance its surface protection.
