What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a specialized and essential process in metal surface cleaning, predominantly utilized post metal formation to ensure pristine quality. This meticulous process involves immersing the metal into an acid bath known as pickling liquor, which is carefully chosen based on the specific metal type. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the acid of choice. However, for metals with high resistance to acids, a stronger acid or a dual-process pickling technique may be employed to achieve impeccable cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse of the metal to eliminate large dirt and debris particles. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a carefully formulated pickling liquor bath. The acid in the bath diligently works to purify the metal surface by removing all impurities. It is crucial to adhere to a precise immersion time to prevent overexposure, ensuring that surface imperfections are effectively eradicated with minimal metal loss. After the pickling, a subsequent rinse cleanses any residual acid, and the metal is often treated with an oiling process to enhance its protective qualities.
