What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, universally applied after metal formation to ensure pristine quality. This meticulous method involves immersing metal in an acid solution, known as pickling liquor, which efficiently cleanses the surface. The specific acid used is contingent on the metal type; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is favored. For metals exhibiting high acid resistance, a stronger acid or a two-step pickling approach may be necessary to attain optimal cleaning outcomes.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse to remove any large dirt and debris particles from the metal. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor. During immersion, the acid delicately strips impurities from the surface while preserving the metal's integrity. The process is time-sensitive; thus, the metal is extracted upon reaching the optimal immersion duration to prevent overexposure. With precise control of pickling liquor composition and immersion time, surface imperfections are meticulously eradicated, minimizing metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes a final rinse and often an oiling treatment to enhance surface finish and protection.
