What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an advanced metal surface cleaning technique, indispensable after metal formation. This process involves immersing the metal into a specialized acidic solution known as pickling liquor. The composition of this liquor is crucial and varies based on the metal type; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is preferred. For metals exhibiting significant acid resistance, a stronger acid or a dual-step pickling method is employed to ensure optimal cleaning.
How is pickling performed?
Initially, the metal is meticulously rinsed to eliminate substantial dirt and debris. Subsequently, it undergoes submersion in the pickling liquor bath. During immersion, the potent acid actively removes surface impurities. To prevent excessive exposure, the metal is extracted after a predetermined immersion duration. The correct choice of pickling liquor and precise immersion timing ensure surface imperfections are efficiently eradicated, minimizing metal loss. Post-pickling, another rinse occurs, often followed by an oiling process to enhance surface protection.
