What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleansing process, predominantly employed post-metal formation. This meticulous procedure involves immersing metal into a potent acidic solution, known as pickling liquor, tailored specifically to each type of metal. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the preferred choice. However, for metals with high acid resistance, a more robust acid or a two-step pickling method might be necessary to achieve pristine cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
Before beginning the pickling process, metals are typically pre-rinsed with a special solution to remove any large dirt particles or debris. Subsequent to this cleansing stage, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor. The acid within this bath adeptly removes impurities from the metal's surface. To prevent overexposure, the metal is carefully removed once the designated immersion time is reached. When conducted correctly, pickling ensures the removal of surface imperfections with minimal metal loss. Following this, the metal is rinsed once more, after which it often undergoes a protective oiling process.
