What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly employed after a metal has been formed. This meticulous procedure involves immersing the metal into a specially formulated acid, known as pickling liquor, which efficiently purifies the metal's surface. The choice of acid in the pickling liquor is tailored to the specific metal being treated. In the case of most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is typically utilized. For metals that exhibit high resistance to standard acids, a more potent acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling process may be required to attain the optimal cleaning outcome.
How is pickling performed?
Prior to pickling, the metal undergoes an initial rinse with a solution designed to eliminate large dirt particles and debris. Post-rinsing, the metal is submerged into a bath of pickling liquor. In this critical phase, the acid acts to effectively strip away impurities from the metal's surface. The duration of immersion is carefully regulated to avoid overexposure to the acid. With the right composition of pickling liquor and precise immersion timing, surface discontinuities are skillfully eradicated with minimal metal loss. Upon removal from the pickling bath, the metal is rinsed again and often proceeds to a final process known as oiling to enhance its surface protection.
