What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface treatment process predominantly utilized after metal shaping. This meticulous cleaning technique involves immersing the metal into an acid bath, referred to as pickling liquor, tailored specifically to the metal type. For low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is commonly employed, while metals with higher acid resistance may demand a more potent acid blend or a two-phase pickling approach to ensure pristine surface cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinsing stage to clear away larger debris from the metal surface. Following this, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid effectively dissolves impurities. Strict adherence to immersion time is crucial to prevent excessive metal degradation. Once the target cleanliness is achieved, the metal is extracted and subjected to another rinse to eliminate residual acid. Subsequently, a protective oiling process is often performed to shield the freshly cleaned surface.
