What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning technique, primarily applied post metal formation. This transformative process involves immersing the metal in a specially formulated acid solution known as pickling liquor. The specific acid type is tailored to the metal involved; however, hydrochloric acid is prevalent for most low alloy steels. In cases where metals exhibit high acid resistance, a more potent acid or an advanced two-step pickling process may be required to achieve optimal cleaning.
How is pickling performed?
The journey to a pristine metal surface begins with a thorough rinse to eliminate visible dirt and debris. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid diligently removes surface impurities. After a predetermined duration, the metal is extracted to avoid excessive acid exposure. This precise timing ensures the removal of surface irregularities with minimal metal loss. Post pickling, the metal undergoes another rinse before moving on to a protective oiling process.
