What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a highly efficient metal surface cleaning process, predominantly employed post-metal formation. It achieves pristine cleanliness by immersing the metal in a specialized acid bath, termed pickling liquor. The choice of acid varies based on the metal's properties—a common selection for low alloy steels is hydrochloric acid. For metals exhibiting substantial acid resilience, more potent acids or a two-tier pickling method may be required to achieve optimal surface purity.
How is pickling performed?
In the meticulous process of pickling, metals undergo an initial rinse to eliminate substantial dirt and debris particles. Post-rinse, the metal is submerged into a meticulously prepared pickling liquor bath. The acid diligently eradicates surface impurities during immersion. Metal is promptly removed upon reaching the preset time limit to prevent excessive acid exposure. With precise pickling liquor formulation and carefully monitored immersion duration, the procedure effectively rectifies surface imperfections while preserving metal integrity. After removal from the bath, the metal is rinsed anew, often proceeding to an oiling phase for additional protection.
