What is pickling steel?
Pickling represents a crucial metal surface purification process, predominantly applied post-metal formation. This transformative technique involves immersing metal into a specialized acid solution, known as pickling liquor, to cleanse its surface. The acid type within the pickling liquor is carefully selected based on the specific metal undergoing treatment, with hydrochloric acid being the common choice for most low alloy steels. For metals exhibiting significant acid resistance, either a stronger acid or a two-step pickling method may be necessary to achieve optimal cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to remove substantial dirt and debris from the metal. Subsequently, the metal is submerged into a pickling liquor bath, where the acid effectively removes surface impurities. Careful attention is given to the immersion time to prevent overexposure, ensuring the removal of surface discontinuities with minimal metal loss. Following acid treatment, the metal undergoes another rinse and may proceed to a subsequent oiling process to enhance its surface condition.
