What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process predominantly utilized post-metal formation. This transformative technique purifies metal surfaces by immersing them in an acid solution, commonly referred to as pickling liquor. The choice of acid varies with the metal type; however, hydrochloric acid is frequently used for most low alloy steels. For metals that exhibit high resistance to acids, employing a more potent acid or a dual-step pickling approach might be necessary to achieve impeccable cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
Prior to the pickling process, metals undergo an initial rinsing to eliminate substantial dirt and debris. Post-rinsing, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath where the acid dissolves surface impurities. It's critical to adhere to a specific immersion duration to prevent excess acid exposure. By selecting the appropriate pickling liquor and accurately timing the immersion, surface imperfections are effectively removed with minimal metal degradation. Following the pickling phase, the metal is rinsed again and typically undergoes an oiling procedure to enhance its surface finish.
