What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface purification process frequently employed after metal formation. This meticulous procedure involves immersing the metal into a pickling liquor, an acid tailored to the specific metal type. For the majority of low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the optimal choice. However, for metals that exhibit heightened resistance to acids, a more potent acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling procedure may be required to achieve the pristine cleaning outcomes desired.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to eliminate significant dirt and debris. Once cleansed, the metal enters a pickling liquor bath, where the acid diligently eradicates surface impurities. After achieving the necessary immersion time to prevent excessive acid exposure, the metal is extracted to maintain its integrity. With the ideal pickling liquor and precise timing, unwanted surface imperfections are efficiently removed with minimal metal attrition. Subsequently, the metal undergoes a secondary rinse and is often subjected to an oiling process for enhanced protection and finish.
