What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an advanced metal surface refinement process, primarily employed post-metal formation. This meticulous procedure involves immersing the metal in a specially formulated acid solution, known as pickling liquor. The composition of this liquor is tailored to the specific metal, with hydrochloric acid being prevalent for low alloy steels. However, for metals exhibiting exceptional resistance to acids, a more robust acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling method may be required to achieve the pristine cleanliness desired.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to eliminate substantial dirt and debris from the metal surface. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid diligently removes surface impurities. This immersion is carefully timed to avoid overexposure, ensuring minimal metal loss while achieving a flawless surface. After the acid treatment, the metal undergoes a final rinse and usually proceeds to a protective oiling phase, enhancing its durability and resistance to corrosion.
