What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential and meticulously crafted metal surface cleansing process, predominantly utilized following the formation of metals. This intricate procedure involves immersing the metal in a specialized acid solution, known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid for this solution varies according to the type of metal, though hydrochloric acid is typically used for most low alloy steels. For metals displaying heightened resistance to acids, stronger acids or a dual-phase pickling strategy may be employed to achieve optimal cleaning results, ensuring a pristine surface.
How is pickling performed?
To commence the pickling process, the metal undergoes an initial rinse to eliminate significant dirt and debris. Subsequently, it is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid eradicates surface impurities. Upon reaching a predetermined immersion duration, the metal is extracted to avert excessive acid exposure. With the ideal combination of pickling liquor and precise immersion timing, surface irregularities are effectively removed with minimal metal degradation. After extraction from the pickling bath, the metal is rinsed once more, then often proceeds to an oiling process for further treatment.
