What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning technique, prevalently employed after metal forming processes. This meticulous process involves immersing the metal into an acid solution, aptly termed as pickling liquor, tailored to the type of metal involved. For low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the preferred choice, effectively removing scale and impurities. For metals exhibiting high acid resistance, a more potent acid or a dual-step pickling approach is imperative for optimal surface purification.
How is pickling performed?
The initial step in pickling involves rinsing the metal with a solution to eliminate substantial dirt particles. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid diligently works to cleanse the surface impurities. Upon reaching the predetermined immersion time, the metal is extracted to avert acid overexposure. When executed with the appropriate pickling liquor and precise timing, the process efficiently eradicates surface irregularities while conserving the metal's integrity. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes a thorough rinse and often proceeds to an oiling process, ensuring a pristine and protected finish.
