What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential and meticulous surface cleaning process for metals, often utilized post-formation to ensure pristine surfaces. This technique involves immersing the metal into a specially formulated acidic solution known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid varies depending on the metal type; for instance, hydrochloric acid is commonly used for low alloy steels. However, for metals with high acid resistance, a stronger acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling process might be necessary to achieve superior cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process commences with a preliminary rinse to eliminate large debris and dirt particles from the metal surface. After rinsing, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath where the acid delicately erodes impurities. It's crucial to adhere to a predetermined immersion duration to avert any potential overexposure to the acid. With the right combination of pickling liquor and immersion timing, surface imperfections are efficiently removed with minimal loss of metal. Post pickling, the metal undergoes another rinse and may then proceed to an oiling process to preserve its refined finish.
