What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process primarily utilized post-metal formation. This transformative cleaning involves submerging metal in a potent acidic solution known as pickling liquor, which efficiently removes surface impurities. The specific acid composition of the pickling liquor varies based on the metal type, with hydrochloric acid commonly used for low alloy steels. For metals with high acid resistance, a stronger acid or a two-step pickling process may be necessary to ensure thorough cleaning.
How is pickling performed?
The meticulous pickling process begins with an initial rinse to clear away large particles of dirt and debris. The metal is then immersed in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid meticulously cleanses the surface impurities. To prevent overexposure, the metal is removed after a designated immersion time, ensuring effective cleansing with minimal metal loss. Following this, the metal undergoes a final rinse and often proceeds to an oiling stage, ensuring optimal surface protection.
