What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process predominantly utilized after metal formation. This purification method involves immersing the metal into an acid solution known as pickling liquor, effectively cleansing the surface. The specific type of acid used in pickling liquor is contingent upon the metal being treated. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the preferred choice. When dealing with metals exhibiting high acid resistance, a stronger acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling approach may be employed to achieve optimal surface cleaning.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse to eliminate substantial dirt and debris particles from the metal. Following this preparatory step, the metal is immersed in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid actively works to eradicate surface impurities. The metal remains in the bath for a predetermined period to prevent overexposure to the acidic solution. With a tailored pickling liquor and precise immersion duration, surface irregularities are effectively removed with minimal material loss. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes a secondary rinse and is often subjected to an oiling process for further protection and finish.
