What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, primarily employed post-metal formation to ensure impeccable cleanliness. This method involves immersing the metal in an acid solution known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid varies depending on the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being the preference for low alloy steels. For metals exhibiting substantial acid resistance, more potent acids or a dual-step pickling process might be necessary to achieve optimal cleaning efficacy.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a meticulous rinsing phase, where the metal is cleansed of large debris and dirt particles. Following this, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath where the acid effectively eradicates surface impurities. A careful balance is maintained to prevent overexposure by adhering to a precise immersion time. This ensures surface impurities are removed, leaving minimal metal loss. Post immersion, the metal undergoes a second rinse and often proceeds to an oiling stage for enhanced protection.
