What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly employed post-metal formation to ensure a pristine surface. This method involves immersing the metal into a specialized acid solution, known as pickling liquor, which effectively purges the surface of impurities. The composition of this acid solution varies based on the type of metal; however, hydrochloric acid is frequently used for low alloy steels. For metals exhibiting high resistance to standard acids, a more potent acid or a multi-step pickling approach may be required to achieve optimal cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to eliminate larger dirt and debris. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid actively removes surface impurities. It is crucial to adhere to a precise immersion time to avoid overexposure to the acid, which could lead to excessive metal loss. After achieving the desired level of cleanliness, the metal is extracted from the bath and subjected to another rinse. As a final touch, the metal typically undergoes oiling to enhance its surface protection.
