What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, highly regarded for its effectiveness, especially post-metal formation. It involves immersing the metal in a specialized acid solution known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid in this solution is tailored to the type of metal, with hydrochloric acid being a common choice for most low alloy steels. For metals exhibiting strong acid resistance, a more potent acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling procedure may be employed, ensuring impeccable cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process commences with an initial rinsing of the metal to effectively eliminate sizeable dirt particles and debris. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in the pickling liquor bath, where the acid diligently eradicates surface impurities. It's crucial to adhere to a specified immersion time to prevent excessive acid exposure. With the ideal pickling liquor and precise timing, surface irregularities are meticulously removed with minimal metal loss. Following the pickling stage, the metal undergoes a final rinse, frequently followed by a process known as oiling, to ensure comprehensive cleanliness.
