What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly utilized post metal formation. This technique involves immersing the metal into a specialized acid solution known as pickling liquor, effectively cleansing the surface. The type of acid used varies depending on the metal; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is preferred. For metals exhibiting high acid resistance, more potent acids or a dual-step pickling method are employed to attain optimal cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse to eliminate large dirt and debris particles. The metal is then submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid dissolves surface impurities. Careful monitoring ensures that the immersion duration is controlled to prevent excessive acid exposure. By selecting the appropriate pickling liquor and adjusting immersion time, surface flaws are efficiently eradicated with minimal metal wastage. After removal, the metal is rinsed and often proceeds to an oiling stage for enhanced protection.
