What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly employed post-metal formation to ensure an immaculate finish. This meticulous method involves immersing the metal in a specialized acid solution, known as pickling liquor, which varies depending on the metal type. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the go-to solution, though more resistant metals may require a stronger acid or a dual-step pickling process to achieve optimal cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
Before commencing the pickling process, the metal undergoes a preliminary rinse to eliminate prominent dirt and debris. Subsequently, the metal is submerged into a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid diligently purges impurities from its surface. After an established immersion period, the metal is extracted to avert excessive acid exposure. By selecting the appropriate pickling liquor and adhering to precise immersion durations, surface imperfections are effectively eradicated with negligible metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal receives a final rinse, often followed by an oiling procedure to enhance its finish.
