What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly employed after metal formation. This meticulous technique involves immersing the metal into an acidic solution known as pickling liquor to meticulously cleanse its surface. The choice of acid depends on the type of metal being treated. For example, hydrochloric acid is typically used for most low alloy steels. However, for metals that exhibit high acid resistance, a more potent acid or a two-step pickling process may be required to attain the desired pristine surface cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to eliminate substantial particles of dirt and debris from the metal. Following this preparatory stage, the metal is immersed in a bath of pickling liquor. Here, the acid diligently works to dissolve impurities from the metal's surface. To prevent overexposure, the metal is removed after a predetermined immersion period. By using the optimal pickling liquor and ensuring precise immersion timing, surface impurities are effectively eliminated with minimal loss of the metal itself. After the pickling bath, the metal undergoes a second rinse and is often followed by oiling to enhance protection.
