What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a refined and critical metal surface cleaning process, predominantly applied post-metal formation. This meticulous procedure involves immersing the metal into an acid solution known as the pickling liquor. The choice of acid varies with the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being prevalent for most low-alloy steels. For metals exhibiting high acid resistance, more potent acids or a comprehensive two-step pickling process is employed to achieve impeccable surface cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling procedure initiates with a meticulous rinsing of the metal to eradicate significant dirt and debris particles. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid actively purifies the surface. Adherence to a precise immersion duration is crucial to prevent acid overexposure. With the optimal pickling liquor and immersion time, surface imperfections are efficiently removed with minimal metal wastage. Post pickling, the metal undergoes a secondary rinse followed by a vital process termed oiling, ensuring a pristine finish.
